Works on iOS 9, but killing my phone battery

Works for me on iOS 9, but its killing my phone battery with whatever background task is running. Shows 44% of battery by pebble app.

Another, possibly related issue is if I try and check for a software update for the watch, the app says its not able to reach the update server. Maybe it keeps doing that all the time and thats the source of the drain.
